About Canungra and Lamington National Park (developed section)

Small-town charm and a family-friendly country pub – it’s long been a recipe for success and Canungra is no different. Popular with motorcyclists, hang-gliders and walkers, Canungra and the nearby village of Beechmont are gateways to Lamington National Park and the famous Queensland eco-resorts of O’Reilly’s and Binna Burra.

The nearby Lahey Tramway tunnel serves as a graphic reminder of how timber-getters battled to bring in felled trees from surrounding hills to the Canungra saw-mill and both O’Reillys and Binna Burra have their own rich historic past, with tales of crossing raging rivers, seemingly impenetrable rainforest and hostile mountains to secure access to what are now regarded as iconic resorts.

The founding fathers of this region were also among a group of influential Queenslanders who fought to secure national park protection for what is now recognised as the World Heritage listed Lamington National Park.
